Although the boom in long-distance wilderness hiking in the United States during the 1970s reflected a desire to escape the cares of a commercialized society, it was nevertheless entwined with consumerism. Going "back to nature" had long been associated with personal revitalization, but starting in the 1960s, recreation advocates began pragmatically promoting so-called "minimalist" camping to stem the damage caused by overuse. With the time and money to purchase devices like portable stoves and nylon tents, hikers who knew little about ecology could traverse the wild withoutcausing significant ecological harm. Thus a flourishing marketplace in outdoor gear made the wilderness accessible to inexperienced but well-off adventurers.
