In the early 1800s, political parties funded United States newspapers, and most editors used their publications to loudly endorse party platforms and candidates. From publishers' perspectives, early-nineteenth-century newspaper readers were voters, and since the era predated women's suffrage, such readers were necessarily male. Women did read and write into newspapers, but publishers were often critical or dismissive of these “women politicians.”By the 1890s, however, newspaper publishers had shifted their focus. News became a commodity, its form and content shaped by financial considerations. Advertising revenue served as the major source of profits, which meant that ideal newspaper readers were no longer voters, but consumers. This transformation changed publishers' vision of newspapers' readership, since advertisers regarded women as the primary purchasers in American households.
